Our mission is to fulfill the Great Commission through writing.
Meetings are free and open to any Christian writer regardless of genre or experience. Members range from unpublished beginners to frequently published authors. Fiction, nonfiction, inspirational, poetry and other genres are often bandied about.
At each meeting, we provide time for informal networking and discussion as well as sharing writing for those who wish some feedback. A presentation on a topic of interest to serious Christian writers enhances our professional abilities.
This group was started in January 2006 by Carolyn Griffin and Kathy Moses at Eastside Assembly of God Church in Tucson. We continued meeting there on the second Saturday of each month through June 2013. Since the congregation was about to relocate farther east, we moved to central Tucson to be more accessible. We now meet at Amphitheater Bible Church, 226 West Prince Road, 85705.
In June 2011, Donna Goodrich of Phoenix boosted our membership numbers by presenting her all day basic writing conference at First Assembly of God Church in Tucson. You can find her at www.thewritersfriend.net.
As for demographics, we are men and women of all ages. We write everything you can think of: prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, Christian, secular, novels, short stories, screenplays, devotions, and song lyrics. We don't discriminate on the basis of genre, denomination, or anything else. A few of us make a living by writing or editing. Others have "day jobs". A few are officially retired. Some of us have been publishing for years. Others are not yet published. Writers from Red Rock to Green Valley and Sierra Vista attend our meetings and keep up with us by email.
At the November 9 meeting we will be electing a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. This is the minimum number of officers we need before we can apply to become an American Christian Writers chapter. You can find them at www.ACWriters.com. Individual annual membership at $49 gains you a copy of their monthly magazine Christian Communicator, which is full of articles on writing craft and marketing. You can also attend their Mentoring Retreats in various locations around the country at reduced rates. ACW also has writing courses and recordings of earlier conference presentations you will find useful.
We aim to provide a support, encouragement, networking, and learning group for Christian writers in southern Arizona, and make it easy to find. In January 2014 we'll start charging yearly dues of $20 - $25 to cover our expenses.
